Intentions

Welcome; the intention is to tell a little about my whereabouts, travel adventures, and issues at Elk Ridge, including when I will be on the ranch, when a great time to visit (send grandchildren), etc. Hopefully there will be different divisions for Travel, Ranch Activities, etc.

Update

Well, the last 2 1/2 weeks went really fast but just to keep informed we are home safe. It is so strange to realize that a day ago we spent a great few hours with Inger in Amsterdam, then were up 24-25 hours, 15 of which on airplanes, then home. Back to reality; Lynn on OB all night tonight in hospital. I'm just not looking forward to unpacking.
Highlights: Seeing Inger, having fun at the Van Gogh museum etc in Amsterdam.
Meeting Lynn's Swedish friends in Stockholm, spending a great day there.
The Evening with the Czars in St. Petersburg Russia, unforgettable.
The Oceania cruise ship was stupendous. Best ever. I see the difference in the price point.
Denmark was interesting, not overly impressive, but stopped at a quaint real-to-life fishing fishing at the tip top north point of the country. Think Expensive but great North Sea seafood and cheeses!
Home now; hope all is well around the country, rain has stopped, sun is shining.

Stockholm

It's been a while... but the cruise has been great.  Today was Stockholm and Lynn's friends came from two different locales in Sweden, what a fun day. One couple lives just on the Arctic Circle and the other in the interior,  quite a reunion.
Stockholm is beautiful and we had such fun!
Just a pic or two of our little group and in the famous Ice Bar.
Tomorrow a small island off the coast of Sweden, then "somewhere else".
Jim: wear your helmet!  Joyce told on you!
Love to all,
Dad/ UR

Baltic Trip

Good afternoon... now,  i know it can become rather tedious viewing photos about other people's photos,  so just automatically delete as some come in.
First day in Copenhagen, "Little Mermaid", gazing longingly for her handsome prince...a true fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen,  but famous nevertheless.
Late lunch on the harbor,  Copenhagen.  This array costs us $70.00; oh well,  I guess.
Nice to be back in the native country,  although a long way from Bornholm!
 Meet the ship tomorrow.
Anyone hear? Diane and Rob survive the little windstorm?  Last I heard the three of them were all huddled up wishing they had a 1) basement and 2) something that floats!

Updates:

Good morning everyone: just an update from the AZ Dicksons'.
First, looks like Florida is going to get more rain, as  well as the Carolina Dicksons! On my weather app it looks like the Villages aren't really expecting much as opposed to the south eastern coast. I see where Miami is expecting 115 mph; cool. Will the storm surge effect the Carolina Dicksons' much?
Update is to notify we'll be out of the country from the 9th-26th September! Itinerary to follow, but email should work as well as "What's App", something I heard about only a few months ago, similar to face time or whatever...anyway, it's been fun  talking with  Inger in Dusseldorf that way!! Texts, phone, video, all the same over the internet. What won't they think of next...
   Plan:
Sat 9, leave Tucson  for DFW, then on to Madrid, then on to Copenhagen. Stay
two nights at Hotel Adina, see some sights.
Sept 12th, board the Oceania Marina, ship leaves 6 pm.
    14th : Helsinki Finland, 8 - 5 pm.
     15th : St Petersburg Russia
      17th:  Tallin, Estonia
18th: Stockholm Sweden; Lynn has some friends in Sweden who are flying into Stockholm to re-unite with her and show us around for the day. She can't wait for that!
      19th: Visby, Sweden
20th: Warnemunde Germany: basically a stopover to take a day trip into Berlin. Can't wait for that!!
21st: Skagen, Denmark. Unfortunately it's about as far as you can get from Bornholm and still be in Denmark!
      22nd : Oslo Norway.
24 : Amsterdam, get off the boat, stay two nights at the Klimpton de Witt.
++ Here we get  to see Inger for a whole day/night in Amsterdam!+++ This should be interesting.
We leave Amsterdam Monday the 25th.
I can leave flight nos. if anyone interested...Amer Airlines.
Love to all,
Dad/UR

Winter Park!

Greetings from the AZ Dickson's: we just completed a great week in Winter Park CO, escaping the heat from AZ, and while I'm sure rumors will fly we DID have a good time albeit with many adventures.
Erica and Megan and Jeff flew up Sat., got there first.
Ash and Noelle and Addie and Matteo drove up Sat, and Lynn and I non-stopped it driving from the ranch Sunday.
We had some great dinners out, a couple in, and did all the fun things.
Ash and Matteo rented fancy downhill bikes, and all the equipment dressed up like spacemen, and took the chair up and came down the mountain. Ash only had one nice crash off a little bridge down a gully and came up rather beat up and bruised. Matteo did the best from what I gather.
The Orihuela's and Lynn and I rented bikes and did the Frazier River trail, down  to Frazier, up to the ski area, and back down  to W.P. Fun trip, no crashes this time!
One day off to Grand Lake, kids went swimming, a beautiful area for sure.
That night I was awakened around midnight by a crash at the dumpster: sure enough when I looked out, there was a big black bear wandering around the parking lot!! I have never seen a bear in Winter Park in all the 35 years going summer and winter. Jeff got up and saw it, and Lynn got a good view as well. Cool!
I got to fish a day or so on the upper Colorado and had a great time with many Brown trout.
One evening Lynn and I went for a little drive up Vasquez Creek and up in the meadow area found several big moose, including a big Bull, a few cows, and  a calf. We went back to the condo, the Orihuela's wanted to check it out, so we went back up. We didn't see the bull but the others were there and it was a great learning experience! On the way back we came upon a nice big black bear on the road. We turned off the truck and just watched him/her for a long while. Never have I had it so Quiet in the truck!! We were about 15 feet away; Ash wasn't breathing and the kids were agape. Really neat.
Last day: Lynn and I left early, Ash and kids to leave that afternoon, and  EJ and Megan with Noelle to assist were to leave Sat afternoon; But: EJ and Megan took that chair lift to Sunspot, explored a bit, took pics at that wooden platform with the great view,  then were to ride down. Someone got scared so the decision was made to hike. Part way down, of course, EJ slipped carrying Megan and a fractured fibula was the result. Ash stayed the day, helped out, and now all home and safe.
A great adventuresome time. Now Lynn and I, in the quiet cabin, are enjoying a quiet rain, the horses (have three now up here...) are grazing in the green pasture, and best of all it's 66 degrees outside!
Tomorrow we fly home if the monsoons give us a break back to Tucson. It's back to work.
Plans: Wed or Thursday I'll fly back up to start the mowing process, and Jim Shepherd is going to come out for several days to hang out, fish a little, get out of the Kansas heat.
It's the good old summer time!
Love to all, UR/DAD

California Csrlsbad vacation

Ok.... vacation week in Ca off to an auspicious start...
But first,  en route from Phx on I 10, there is a really interesting Patton tank museum that is worth the stop,  hence the pic..
Having a really fun time w Addie for sure!
Now the auspicious beginning part...
1. Part of my Jeep fell off on the interstate... only some trim as far as I can tell though.
2. Got a little bit confused on the check -in check out date! Turns out I'm a day early! So! We get an extra day on the cool coast!  Luckily they have a little studio to stay in for the night.... So it's all good!
 Now what to do tomorrow...

Family reunion

Had a great family reunion,  wonderful get together.
Just when Uncle Ken started his report the storm let loose and it poured... ha ha!  Poor Ken.
Uncle Bill looked great and did well at 94. Aunt Augusta was beautiful and walked over...93.
Noe had a great time and has learned a lot but got a little drenched.
Heidi says hello, her kids are adorable, and everyone else sends their regards.  It is a good family and we all survived and thrived another year.
Love to all,  UR/Dad.

Finish at Dirty Kanza bike race!

 Downtown Emporia.
In town for the Dickson picnic with Noelle! Beautiful day.

New relative!

Ok, stay with me on this:
Walking around the block party in Emporia while riders coming in Jim kept running into friends of course.  One guy raised in Osage City, and wife,  and married a girl from Miller close to where great Uncle John had a place.  Turns out she is a Dickson!  Her dad was Dale Dickson,  the pilot who had that airstrip out front of his farm house,  founder of the Flying Farmers Assoc of Kansas of all things.
We are second cousins I guess.
Is she a Dickson or what? Gotta love Emporia. Husband is city manager.
Having a good time in Kansas..
Love, UR/Dad

Watch "Just A Common Soldier" on YouTube

https://youtu.be/eEs4ke7cdNQ

Just takes a minute or two;  reminds me of my father,  my uncles Herschell and Thomas and Bill, and many men I have had the pleasure of their acquaintance. Hope it comes through.
Happy Memorial Day!  Give a little Thanks,

Greetings all; Well, nothing special, except that's it's been 3 months since an update. Summary: had a fun Thanksgiving, great Christmas (no skate board accidents this time), and a fun New Year at the ranch with some mountain friends. January pretty quiet: Lynn worked a lot, but we did get to ski at Sunrise some! Feb busy with 1) Jim Shepherd came down and spent a month in Tucson; we got to play golf, mess around. I warned him to be careful with his belongings at his rental house (rented with a friend from Kansas) but it did little good. He was in town about 30 minutes and got his bike stolen... We also had a few days visit from old Junior High friends-high school friends from Topeka! That was fun as well. Other than that, Feb quiet too. March has been fun; Lynn and I spent a week in Winter Park but we were the only Dicksons there this year! Was quiet, but the skiing was superb and a day at the snowmobile playing place was a blast. We did set a new record...temperature was 0 deg at the base, 24 Below at the 12,400 foot summit wind chill. Believe it or not, it was really neat coming down Parsienne Bowl and we have photos to prove it! Before that week, Lynn was up at the Phx horse show place and won her share of pretty ribbons at an Arab show this time, on a borrowed horse no less. Things coming up: There's a Matteo birthday party coming up in Phx; I have found myself leading a book club discussion on the Apache Wars at the Mountain Oyster Club coming up; Taxes are due, and along with the Marx-Son Farms LLC it's an interesting project this year. Thanks a lot, U.K.! I'm needing a lot of ice cream for this one.. Just so you know, trying to keep in touch: April: Bob and Mary Leigh Dyck from Kansas come to visit the ranch (high school friend and wife), then Easter in Arizona, then I go to Kansas for turkey season! Come back in time for a coed horse trek and party down in the San Rafael Valley on a friend's ranch. May: to Lee's Ferry for a couple days fly fishing on the Colorado River as it enters the Grand Canyon. Otherwise quiet. So far. June: I have tickets to Kansas for the Dickson reunion, the first Sunday after Memorial Day, in Emporia so I'm going! After that it's a trip to California for Grandpa and G'Ma Lynn for a week in the Hilton Vacations club. I'm not sure who all else is coming but I think it will be a blast! July: Lynn has the 4th off this year, and the last two weeks off. I'm not sure what all we are going to end up doing but at least some of it will be in Colorado. August: no idea Sept: Have booked a Baltic cruise with friends and hope to visit Moscow as well. I also have an antelope expedition in there somewhere in Wyoming with the cousins. That's about it; trust all is well around the country! I'm betting at least one of the PAC-12 teams will win March Madness, not sure which one. Should be an exciting tourney, especially if the KU guys can stay out of jail... Love to all, UR/DAD
