Intentions

Welcome; the intention is to tell a little about my whereabouts, travel adventures, and issues at Elk Ridge, including when I will be on the ranch, when a great time to visit (send grandchildren), etc. Hopefully there will be different divisions for Travel, Ranch Activities, etc.

FW: Very cool

Good morning all,
I know Veterans day is already way old news, but this was brought to my attention from Anthem AZ, and I found it interesting. In an extended family where many have been involved, thought you might find it interesting as well. Our own little Stonehenge!
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, no matter where life finds you!
We are going to be snug (hopefully...) on our little cabin in the woods, and we'll be joined by Cousins Wayne and Jim! Sounds like Lynn's son Alex and his wife Jessica will join us too. Fun! And then there are the usual mountain friends..
Travel safe! Time to get ready!
Love to all,
Dad/UR

See This Awesome Veterans Day Image That Can Only Be Seen One Day of the Year

picture

A stunning image for Veterans Day shows a light coming through a specially designed memorial that perfectly lights up the Great Seal of the United States! It's a magnificent homage to America's veterans, who light the way for our entire nation.

Designed by Anthem resident Renee Palmer-Jones, the five marble pillars represent the five branches of the United States military.
They are staggered in size and ordered in accordance with the Department of Defense prescribed precedence, ranging from the United States Army, the United States Marine Corp, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard.
Anthem resident and chief engineer, Jim Martin, aligned the five pillars so that at precisely 11:11 a.m. on Veterans Day (November 11), the sun's rays will pass through each of the five pillars' elliptical openings to illuminate a glass mosaic medallion of the Great Seal of the United States.
A fitting tribute to our nation's veterans.

This is Anthem Veterans Memorial in Anthem, Arizona.

A nice visit from the East

Just a little news from the Territories; had a great but short visit from Doug last night. Had some adventures in Lynn's motor home hitching up the horse trailer, and a great steak dinner at the hacienda.
Thanks to Doug for taking some time to pay us a visit!

Kansas

Just about ready to wrap this trip up..a solidly good four days.
We had a great streak dinner at Wayne's last night, I believe I sent a couple of photos, and here's a few more of the "the cousins" and Uncle Bill and A Augusta. I spent the night in Emporia, got to Topeka, caught the shuttle and I'm in the airport, MCI.
 Happy Birthday to Jeff!
Next on the docket is my Charros ride but I probably won't bore people with much from that (after I get a driver's license).
Love too all, hope all is well,
UR/Dad

Family

Made it to Wayne and Anna's house. October is really nice in the Flint Hills for sure.
The empty chair?: that's Mine.
A.D., those little coyotes look familiar?
Looks like we are expecting EIGHTEEN for dinner, and look at those steaks. Ummm!
I'm sure, more later..

Manhattan

Saturday was a blast. Just a couple of photos from the Alma Mater, with tall gate tent and another of my best friends, first college roommate, Fritz Norbury. An independent cuss, mechanical engineer by trade, made a fortune with a couple of patents. Something about chickens and e.coli/salmonella prevention w/o antibiotics. We sat  in some very nice seats..was a great game with a good Wildcat Victory. They should really just cancel the KU game this year and go for next year.
Made it "home" late but safe and went straight to bed; crazy weekend.

OMG

One of my heroes...Go Cats!

Reunion

Just a couple to show that indeed I AM in Topeka Kansas! I am pleasantly surprised on how much fun it is to see these old friends from a previous lifetime a full half century ago!
A couple more photos later..But had to get a shot of the tennis courts. We have spoken of our lives, where we are and how we got there, wherever we find ourselves. There are many little switches/diversions along the way, some accidental, some worked for, some with totally unintended consequences, but that have life changing consequences. Hence the tennis courts.
The moral is, just enjoy the ride, no matter what.
This morning, off to Manhattan to see what University in this state who still has a football program!
Go 'Cats!
Love to all, UR/Dad
and Ken, is Duke Univ Really suing the heirs of John Wayne over the name "The Duke" (with Wayne's signature) over copyright infringement even with his picture on a bottle of whisky?? Good grief. Heard it on the news so it "must be true"...your contributions at work? Ha!

Capitol, revisited

These are some of the murals painted around the rotunda areas, surrounded by limestone. Every subject is meaningful in some way in Kansas history. They are all about 150 yrs old, give our take, and are beautiful.

Statehouse tour

Entry level to Capitol building, successive floors, Senate, House of Rep. Really nice!

Topeka

More later, but this is where it all started..in many ways.

Topeka

A dreary cool rainy day in Topeka. I'm exhausted; cocktail party lasted well into the night, all the way to 9....But then I got sucked into the Royals/Angels playoff game, and then, of course, Arizona! Great game, Go Cats!

Topeka

Bear in mind, some people have asked for pictures of this soon to be infamous week end. This is Robert and me, at an old speakeasy, north Topeka. Goes back to Prohibition days. Excellent Rib-eye.

Kansas Trip

Well, all fools are definitely not dead yet...more about that later.
Up-dates:
First, had a great week-end last; great visit from U Ken/A Susan at our Tucson home, along with Ash and Paul's family, and Jeff and Erica. Watched the younger Dickson sisters get inducted into the Sabino High school Sports Hall of Fame! Tennis prowess! Good Job Battling Dickson Sisters! Very proud.
I've now just landed in Kansas City en route to Topeka and then Manhattan for various reunions. My 50th high school graduation, and then on Sat a trip to Manhattan for a college fraternity reunion and a Kansas State football game. This is good, since I'm pretty sure the state is down to only two universities fielding a football team this year! (K-State and Wichita State..)
Now, as I've said all along, it's Good to have old friends. My flight was fine, but when I got to the rental car counter, no matter what I said or pleading, they simply would Not rent me a car. Something about a mistaken identity and, a small thing really, an expired license...good grief. They wouldn't take my pilot's license our even my Senior Nat'l Park pass. Soooo, long story a little shorter, here I sit in the airport. :-(..But! After I got a shuttle reservation, and called a good old buddy that I was to meet for dinner, he's driving up to pick me up and loaning me a car. Some start to a reunion week-end! I'm a senior citizen, no other explanation required!
Could be worse...I'll keep in touch.
Love to all, UR/Dad

Alaska

We are all packed up and ready to head south after a wonderful journey all the way north up to Fairbanks. While it's been a great experience, we all feel it's time to return to Arizona and, from what we hear, to buy a boat!
The Alaskan people seem to be really friendly, enjoy contact by "outsiders", and are definitely a different breed up here.
The only thing we did not get to experience was the Aurora  Borealis...next time. We even got to see Mt McKinley/Denali on a beautiful cloudless day,  albeit from about 100 miles! Incredible, but really too far out for good pictures.
 Love to all,
UR/Dad

Trip update

Greetings all!
Now we are in the middle of pretty rough seas, about 10 hours out from Seward, our departure terminal. We've had a wonderful time although I feel like a bloated pig...continual deserts and the occaisional beer and that does it..
Yesterday we had a great day in the Glacier Bay Nat'l Park, getting up close to the various glaciers and seeing wildlife. Today, however, a different story with wind, rain, fog to the surface, and waves to 11 feet as per the announcements. I'm thinking more like 100 feet, but we are fine!
Tomorrow is docking at Seward, the domed car train to Anchorage, and spending the night there. We then take another dome car train up to Denali Nat'l Park and spend a couple of days there, then on to Fairbanks.
So far the trip has been really really fun. Seeing the bears that close a few days ago was special, and the dolphins around the ship is fun too.
The past week has really gone fast, and I hope you've all had a good week too.
 Love,
UR/Dad
