Intentions

Welcome; the intention is to tell a little about my whereabouts, travel adventures, and issues at Elk Ridge, including when I will be on the ranch, when a great time to visit (send grandchildren), etc. Hopefully there will be different divisions for Travel, Ranch Activities, etc.

K-State plans farm transition conferences in three locations

Registration open for events in Garden City, Great Bend and Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State University Department of Agricultural Economics will be hosting three conferences to help farmers and ranchers plan for the transition of their farm to the next generation.

Registration is now available online. The locations of the conference include:

  • March 6: Garden City – Clarion Inn.
  • March 7: Great Bend – Great Bend Convention Center.
  • March 8: Manhattan – Manhattan Convention Center.

Each conference begins at 9 a.m. and adjourns by 3 p.m. Lunch and materials will be provided.

Ashlee Westerhold, director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition at K-State, said a 2012 study from the Harvard Business School found that 70% of family-owned businesses fail to transition to new owners successfully.

"In Kansas," she notes, "84.6% of Kansas farms are family owned."

Further, Westerhold said that of the businesses that fail to transition successfully, 60% are due to problems with communication and trust, and 25% are due to lack of preparation for the next generation.

She notes the Farm Journal indicated that 80% of farmers surveyed plan to transfer control of their operation to the next generation, but only 20% were confident that their succession plan would achieve that goal.

"With the values of farm assets and land today, discussing and planning farm succession is even more important," Westerhold said.

Shannon Ferrell, professor and agricultural law specialist in Oklahoma State University's Department of Agricultural Economics, is the keynote speaker at all three locations. He will give an informative, yet humorous, overview of the importance of transition planning and how a farm family can begin the process.

The conference agenda also includes presentations about Farm Service Agency's CRP-TIP program for transitioning farms, an overview of K-State resources for farm transition, and presentations by local attorneys and accountants on the nuts and bolts of putting a plan in place.

"We hope attendees will be motivated to move forward in the transition planning process," Westerhold said. "We will provide tools and resources to assist in that process."

Registration costs $60 and must be received by March 1. More information about the conference is available at www.AgManager.info/events or https://www.agkansitions.org

U of A basket ball

I'm back! These boys are really good...

Updates..

OK, finally figured it out, with a limit of 10 people...
Lynn,
Inger,
Ash,
Noelle,
Erica,
Aunt Susan
Doug Dickson,
Kristin,
Diane Mittenmeyer
Kindra,
Now I know "cousin chat" exists and has a modicum of traffic too, maybe this will help calendars..
Just wish I could see posts too, they need to increase the limits!

blog

Woops; never mind. I forgot to list Ash and Erica so I don't have room for myself or Jim...in fact, since U Ken doesn't read it anyway, I have to cut him too. Such is the fate of the grandfathers..

New trials..

Greetings; it's been a whole year since I've done anything with this...going to try again. It's been raining 36 hours straight here in Tucson and I'm frankly bored.
And, I've added Noelle to our board! I can have 10 addresses. I think I have Ken and Susan, Diane in The Villages, Kindra, Lynn, Doug, and Kristin. And, me..I might add Jim Shepherd since he's bought Two houses down here now 3 miles from me...
Important: Anyone can publish here: BUT, to do so, do Not "reply" because it goes somewhere else, who knows. To reply so everyone gets it....this is the email address:
RCDickson.Autie@blogger.com. I have named "Family" to make it easy...
 Anyway, hoping this works.
Love to all,
Dad/UR

Just updates:

Greetings all, just a note to let those interested in the updates of the AZ Dickson's, at least in Tucson! We've had a great fall, nice rains, cooler temps. We made it through another summer and now we have 5-6 months of glory! YAY!
Sept and Oct 2018 in the books...went fast, were good months. The Los Charros ride was on of best ever, except poor old Justice's age is catching up to him and I'm thinking he's best being retired as a grandchild horse for those interested.
In Tucson: Halloween party coming up Saturday: I'm going as a black plaque "doctor"; Lynn's going either as Black Plaque patient (ugh) or a steam punk girl, not sure which.
Sunday is a 24 hr call for Lynn so I'm thinking of making a trip to Phoenix for a grandchild fix...and maybe even see EJ and/or Ash!
Fri the 2nd is a Mountain Oyster Club Anniv dinner, Saturday the 3rd maybe a trip down to the Empire Ranch in Sonoita to see western theme doin's there, then the 3rd I've got to get to the ranch. If Droughtbuster is in a good mood I'll take her up.
That next week early is a trip to Kansas for appts with the feds for some stuff and some archery deer hunting, then home. I'll likely still be in Kansas for Veteran's Day; did anyone know that Veteran's Day actually started up from Emporia?
Thanksgiving will be low key for us this year; Lynn works the Wed before, the Friday after, and the again all day Sunday. Bummer.
The 5th of December we go to Las Vegas for our NFR fix.
 Then, anyone ready for Christmas???
Love to all,
DAD/UR

Update..

Greetings all,
Quick update;
Panama trip was just plain awesome.  Never would have figured would be so fun.  Of course having good friends as locals with private yacht didn't hurt anything.
En route Wichita KS via Williams- Gateway in Phx. Destination Manhattan KS, 50th college fraternity reunion.  Unbelievable it's been that long!
Photo from this am....poor bull died by combat, Atlas' south pasture,  along the road.  Richardson found it, gets the antlers,  Wolf people get the meat.  Estimate 5 yes old. Sad to see.
 Off to board!
Love to all,
Dad/UR

Info re: Tucson Dicksons

Hello Family,
It's been quite a time since I've written anything here, all to spare you from more junk.
Anyway, it's been an unbelievable first half of 2018....skiing in Aspen and Winter Park of course, couple of trips back to Kansas including the reunion with Addie, successful turkey hunt with my cousins, Jim Shepherd bought his little winter home on a nice golf course here in Tucson, a wonderful summer week in Winter Park, a fun week in Carlsbad CA with Ash/Erica-Jeff and kids, and some time at the ranch.
A "best vacation ever" was had with Inger in France when Lynn and I met up with Inger in Paris, drove down to Blois (on the beautiful Loire River) and took a week long horse ride down the Loire Valley sampling crazy good food, great wines, great horses, and of course the chateaus along the way. The next week was spent in Paris and what a fun time that was.
Had that little incident with the Bonanza in late May but it's all good again and we are back in the air gaining more confidence every flight!

Anyway, Lynn and I tomorrow leave for an adventure in Panama.....we will be in the city of Panama for a day or two, then we leave for an adventure in the jungle in a little jungle village, then back to Panama City, then to a private yacht for several days sailing out among the San Blas Islands. We'll be with a bunch of Los Charros friends, one who's uncle owns the yacht (he is a past president of Panama...). Sounds like fun, eh? We'll have a good crew and cooking staff too.
We will out of contact of all wi-fi and cell when in the back country and at sea so if anyone is looking for us and we can't get back to you, that's where we are. We will be back in contact around the 9th of September.
  Bon voyage,
Love to all, Dad/UR
